Children's Ministry at First Baptist Killen

It is our desire to partner with and equip you as parents to develop strong Biblical foundations for your child. Parents no doubt have the greatest influence on their children. Parents receive their primary instructions for the home in Deutoronomy 6, Ephesians 6:1-4 and countless words of instruction in Proverbs. As parents, know that you have been set apart to introduce and lead your children to Christ. We are here as your church family to partner with you and to help you to give to your children a strong foundation in Christ. We offer strong Biblical teaching both for your children and for you as parents. The children's opportunities are shown below.

Sunday School
We have age graded Sunday School classes for children in 1st - 6th grade. We place a premium on teaching the children age appropriate truths from the Word of God. We realize that Sunday School alone is not enough to help children really understand how to use the Bible and to help them develop advanced Bible skills. So, we try to help children beyond Sunday School by:
  • Providing Bibles for the children to take home.
  • Challenging the children to learn the books of the Bible and to memorize Scripture through interactive games and teaching sessions.
  • Modeling Bible skills when and where possible.
  • Training children's leaders on the importance of age-specific lessons as well as helping the children learn Bible skills.
Sunday School is a strong ministry of our church and we encourage parents to bring their children for this all-important time on Sunday mornings.

A.W.A.N.A.
The acronym AWANA stands for "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed" from 2 Timothy 2:15 which says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (NIV). Our church has been involved with the international AWANA organization since 2003. We have grown considerably and now average about 125 children each Wednesday. Our AWANA ministry runs from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. during the school year only. We take a break during the summer to recharge our leadership and begin again as soon as school starts.

Our children are divided into age specific groups with each age group having their own curriculum:
Cubbies (age 4-5)
Sparks (grades 1-2)
Truth in Training - TNT (grades 3-6)

Within the 1 ½ hour time frame, children are allowed to work in their handbooks, memorize and quote scripture, participate in counsel time as well as recreation time where sportsmanship is primary. The children spend 30 minutes in handbook time, 30 minutes in recreation and 30 minutes in counsel time. Our leaders are trained annually and we are so blessed to be able to teach the truth of God's Word to the children of our church and our community.

Children's Discipleship
Children's Discipleship aims to impart to our Children a God-centered, Christ exalting, Bible-saturated view of themselves and the world that surrounds them in the hope that they will belong wholly to the Lord, serve Him with all of their might, glorify Him in all that they do, spreading that glory to future generations and together with all the saints that they would enjoy Him forever. We do this by teaching the Bible, singing music with doctrinal integrity, and serving the church. Our Core Values are the Sufficiency of Scriptures, The Gospel, Obedience to Authorities, and the use of Doctrinally Sound Music. Our goals are that our children will: know and understand what it means to live as a Christian, know the Gospel, possess a foundational Christ-centered worldview, recognize and obey all God given authorities as they are revealed in scripture, and use and apply the music to daily discipleship.

Year Round Activities
Children's activities are scheduled year-round at First Baptist Killen. We place a high priority on providing Christian events and activities for the children and their families. Events such as Easter egg hunts, kids camp at Earle Trent, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School fellowships, church wide picnic, events through Discipleship Training, the 56ers club for the 5th and 6th graders and a number of AWANA special events are just a few of the planned activities throughout the year.
